We are all about capturing memories and creating heirlooms. We say it at the end of every blog. And now that we are parents of a 3 month old, we’re relishing the moments with clients and their Smalls as they check off milestones.
One of our favorites is the One Year Cake Smash portraits where the babes are dressed up to get dirty and their personalities really come out.
Or not. Some are just excited or curious about the sweets provided, but regardless, the outcome is always adorable.
Each child is individual and special, so each cake smash is too. We help decorate based on mood, time of year and fun specifications we discuss with parents. More often than not, we already know the couple because we’ve photographed their engagement, wedding, maternity and newborn photos. Don’t worry though if you’ve never hired us or even heard of cake smash birthday portraits for your children!! A Brand New Girl | Newborn Pictures of Penelope Jo
Penelope Jo was born February 28th at 4lb 12oz – a miniature gift and one month early. While small enough to put in your pocket on the way to grab lunch, she was completely healthy and discharged before her mom. I KNOW. “Look out, people!! I’ve got stuff TO DO!!” At only 8 days, Whitney and Preston brought this little jewel to our studio for their first ever photo shoot as a family of three. She took my breath away. How can something so teeny pull your heart out of your chest? But she did and I was only the latest. Her parents and grandparents are doing all they can do not to gobble her up.
We photographed Whitney and Preston’s engagement and wedding and watching them gush over Penelope Jo was incredibly sweet. She may be the smallest newborn I’ve photographed – both adorable and beyond cooperative. In fact she was so good that I didn’t want to stop photographing her as she slept peacefully. No matter what props or positions we put her in, she would bend like a reed and as cutely as possible. 
I have no interest in wishing this little girl’s life to fly by – especially with that little tutu and headband – but I’m anxious to see her and photograph her often and watch her grow up. So much satin and sweet, so much cool and composed. She’s a little dream.

How lucky you are, Cameron. You can’t imagine the love that was surrounding you on this day. They say that newborns are near-sighted and mostly focused on mom’s eyebrows and forehead, so you will indeed have to take my word for what you couldn’t see. Behind my lens, you laid there in complete coziness, but you were not alone. So much of your family’s journey was floating around me. From seeing your mom and dad newly married and in love to capturing that couple with a baby on the way and a new daughter and now you. Your timing was perfect. Welcome!
Even your feet were in love with each other. They kept smooching.
Your sister Madelyn came to the shoot and we’ve photographed her growing up too. While we only see your family a couple of times a year, we always look forward to it. And now here you are. This may not always be the case [Secret: siblings can get on each others nerves, but it usually ends well. Keep that in mind when Madelyn boots you out of her room in 10 years.], but right now, you are the apple of her eye. Your sister adores you.
You are a precious being, Cameron and I’m adding my name to the list of fans to go along with your mom, dad and older sister. Come see me again soon, please and take sweet care of yourself. You’re at the very beginning!

Baby, baby, baby photos | Full Year of Portraits
Someone once said that “the days are long, but the years are short” and it’s true. It’s usually repeated by those of us over 40 who still feel 24, but I won’t go there. This blog is about babies. Big, round, gushy, adorable, cooing, cuddly, pooping, burbling bundles of life and hope. Some parents want to document way more than babies first newborn portrait and we love that we offer a way to do this.
But first… here’s Holden. Soak up that deliciousness. I mean seriously – WHAT ON EARTH is he dreaming about to be making a face that awesome?
Little Holden is no longer the teeny-weenie newborn or the 6 month old above, and we know because we photographed him several times as part of the Brand New Baby Collection, a package we offer to families who want to capture the first year of their child’s life and then some. We feel like we not only get to know the family even better, but are able to see and record even minuscule changes in each baby’s growth.

Sweet newborn portraits | Sawyer surfs in

And it looks like he explored every single one of them before crashing.
The Pierce’s have a knack for naming baby boys, especially if you’re a book lover. Their first son, Holden, brought to mind J.D. Salinger’s hero from The Catcher in the Rye. And now they welcome little brother, Sawyer. Above is the Pierce’s Christmas card, where Holden announced that he was moving from solo to big bro in a mere 6 months. For Holden’s first session, he was dressed in a pilot theme as a nod to his father Andy. For Sawyer, the themes were both fun and summery, as he’s a June baby and we gave a little wink to his mom, Traci’s career as a pharmacist – with the wooden box we “cozed” him up in.
While Sawyer is snoozing in most of these shots, he ratified our experience that photographers do not control the schedule at newborn baby portrait sessions. This little lamb wanted to be fed every 20 minutes and was extremely happy and very alert during our time with him and his mom.
