A Bride by any other name | pixels on paper bridal portraits
… is still as sweet and will always be the focus of her wedding day, at least for part of it. People will remember the dancing, the toasts, the goof-ups and sweet moments, but her entry happens one time and all eyes are on her. Maybe this is why bridal portraits are so important. You get more than one look at her in her dress and in a meaningful setting that will last forever in prints and on film. We photograph weddings pretty much all year, but wedding season is really summer. As this summer rolls along, I looked back at some bridal photos that we’ve taken over the last decade. I realized how it’s true that every bride – like every baby – is beautiful. The gown, the setting, the glow are all offshoots of the glorious woman about to start a new chapter. Brides – we celebrate you!
Gowns and settings are as signature as the brides we photograph. They are classical, modern, some want to be princesses, some want to look like photographs of their grandmother, one incorporated book pages into her bouquet, others repurposed brooches or lace or another memento, some seem like complete originals and others timeless. Capturing that is the fun part.
Consider a bridal portrait along with your wedding photography package as a way to experience a “trial run” before your wedding day. It’s a perfect way to try a new hair style and see how your makeup will look. It’s also a fun girl’s day with Mom, your best friend or maid of honor. The setting and season can be totally different from that of the wedding and the environment and timeline is typically much more relaxed giving us extra time to capture those magazine style covers you’ve dreamed of. Sometimes the session is for Mom to have the large portrait of you that she wants to display on the wedding day and then for years to come in her home to share with loved ones and friends. Wedding shows are always a lot of work for us, but it is such a rewarding experience when we get the follow up from a couple we have had a few moments to chat with in a crowded exhibit hall. We love getting the opportunity to hear a bit of a couple’s story, but let’s be honest, the shows can be overwhelming for a couple to attend and leaves very little time to get all the juicy wedding day details. So when Amber and Clark scheduled a follow up consult at our Wilkesboro photo studio after attending the ACES fall wedding show at Appalachian State University, all the hard work to participate in the show paid off.
After the show, we had the chance to meet with these Salisbury native in our Wilkesboro photo studio and learn more details about their NC mountain destination wedding at Leatherwood Mountains in Wilkes County. Their ceremony was going to be a fun filled day with lots of DIY touches and family help. Not to mention their love for all things Appalachian State University and the simple touches of ASU that would be incorporated into the outdoor wedding festivities.
The Leatherwood Mountains cabin stage was the location they chose to say their vows, with the covered pavilion for the reception. With Amber being a graduate from App State, it was certain that the black and gold colors would play a prominent role, both in the bridesmaids dresses, but also in the floral arrangements, all the way down to the tailgate style reception.
After the post-ceremony photos were complete, Amber and Clark made a grand entrance into the covered pavilion through the crowd of guests waving their black and gold streamers. Having spent a lot of time in Boone NC while at ASU for college, Amber had Woodlands BBQ cater the diner, because everyone (including Ryan) LOVES a good pig pickin’! Virtual Sounds Entertainment was on hand to make sure that this party went long into the night. With all the dancing guests and former ASU cheerleaders there was lots of dust kicked up on the dance floor!

Most already know that NC Mountain weddings are breathtaking. We took that inspiration to a new level, literally on top of a mountain in the NC High Country for Kristie’s bridal photography session. Her passion to have a vintage inspired wedding combined with her Mom’s Antique store was the beginning of a picture perfect concept. We’re not generally a fan of overly styled photo shoots but when all the objects in the shoot have a meaning behind them or belong to a family member, we’re all for using them in creative photography. NC Mountain weddings never looked so beautiful! Just wait until you see the wedding pictures.
