Scottish wedding with rain, bagpipes, celtic tunes, a rose and her beloved

O my Luve’s like a red, red rose,
That’s newly sprung in June:
O my Luve’s like the melodie,
That’s sweetly play’d in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a’ the seas gang dry.*

*Robert Burns is perhaps Scotland’s most famous poet. He loved, and believed in, luve. And that poem is particularly sweet because it’s about waiting for the one you luve, no matter how long it takes. More on that later. First – you should meet our red rose, bride Rebekah Bolick (nee McDonald). She was radiant and one of the most serene brides we’ve photographed in a long time… porcelain skin, raven hair, rose-red lips and a gorgeous dress. In other words, worthy of poetry.

Both Rebekah and her groom, Josh wanted to incorporate as many personal details into their wedding and reception as possible. There was nothing but live music for the entire day, starting with a bagpiper who provided the processional. The bride’s father wore a kilt and a celtic band played the reception. Josh’s deceased brother was honored and remembered with photos and music provided by his best friend, the decorations were handmade by family members, the flower arrangements were made and coordinated by the bride’s mother, the cake was created by her aunt, and her amazing headpiece was made by one of her best friends. There was no wedding planner and they clearly didn’t need one since they had a vision they were all thrilled to execute together. It was simply perfect – every element!

Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear,
   And the rocks melt wi’ the sun;
I will love thee still, my dear,
While the sands o’ life shall run.

And fare thee weel, my only luve,
And fare thee weel awhile!
And I will come again, my luve,
Though it were ten thousand mile.

St. Mary of the Hills Episcopal Church, Blowing Rock, NC

So a little note on that last stanza of the poem (above). Rebekah and Josh actually met (and even “dated” for 2 weeks) in the 6th grade when they were only 11. So it wasn’t “10 thousand mile” but it was 8 years or so, when they reconnected while both were attending Appalachian State University. Rebekah was nursing a broken foot and basically laid up for the summer. Josh heard she was immobile, remembered that they lived only a few miles apart and went to visit her and keep her company one afternoon.
Rebekah: “I had no idea at the time that such a pleasantly unexpected visit would bring about the deepest love and friendship I ever could have dreamed for. We proceeded to spend almost every day of that summer together. I couldn’t do much because of my injury, but he made doing the most simple things so enjoyable. We share a mutual love for baking and while we waited for cookies, scones and cakes to rise we built jigsaw puzzles at the kitchen table and talked about any and everything.”

While the wedding day was less sunny than that summer memory, the weather did not beat us.
It didn’t just rain the entire day of their wedding, it poured. We might as well have been IN the highlands of Scotland. After assuring Rebekah and Josh that we would use the rain to our advantage and make the most of this once in a lifetime moment, we captured some of our absolute most favorite images in the rain. With umbrellas in tow, they were cheerful and beautifully romantic while trusting our direction for the only outdoor photos that we would capture that day.

Their reception was lively and fun and filled with all of those thoughtful and beautiful details and care provided by family and friends.
Rebekah:The best thing about our wedding day was how stress free we were. We were just so happy to be getting married and to have all of our dearest people with us to celebrate. We had so much carefree joy that day. Wedding nerves were a non-issue. I just remember my face hurting at times because I could not stop smiling and laughing.”

Pixels On Paper Photographers Blowing Rock NC Mountain Scotish High Country wedding photoPixels On Paper Photographers Blowing Rock NC Mountain Scotish High Country wedding photoOne takeaway as a photography team from this rainy day adventure is that if we cast away our own fears and doubts, our worry about equipment getting wet, dresses getting dirty, hair falling, etc. then our clients will also have no fear or doubt in our capabilities and the amazing images will be worth whatever adversity they face. A second takeaway is that no matter the place, the day, the weather, the couple or the circumstances, we love, luve, LOVE what we do!

Mountain Wedding combines rustic, stylish, Jewish and traditional elements

The only minor thing about Katie and Josh’s October wedding was their now-shared surname. Katie Muskal wore her mother’s wedding gown when she walked down the aisle to marry her groom, Josh Minor. The gown was reworked and tailored to suit her style, but kept the elements that reminded her of her mom and bonded them that day. And that’s only the beginning….

The bride told us that she, “wanted to create a casual, rustic but chic, festive atmosphere where everyone could be comfortable and have a good time. And of course, we wanted it to be in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains!”
Katie is a native of Pennsylvania, but as an Appalachian State alum, she got the mountain bug and fell in love with our Blue Ridge  …… and fell even further for a NC boy – Josh. “
After dating a few months, we spent an amazing weekend deep in the mountains while attending a football game. I can honestly say that the beautiful scenery helped us fall in love more and more each day. For our wedding, I wanted to recreate that feeling of love we experienced on that trip.”

There is something about an outdoor wedding that is both challenging and adventurous and so deeply cool. Everyone is surrounded by mother nature, we’re all under the sky, there is tender ambient noise, and the trees and flowers and the rest of nature become attendees.

A little shout out: this couple worked with the amazing talent of Buddy Fore and his efforts tend to result in the most beautiful and well-organized weddings.  Just look at his table arrangements!! Also, look for him in the 2016 issue of High Country Wedding Guide.
There was no shortage of details that spoke to autumn and tradition. The bride’s Jewish upbringing was celebrated with
a “chuppah” made of antique cloth from both the bride’s and groom’s grandmothers. They celebrated with a “breaking of the glass” ceremony, and later the “hora” chair dance at the reception. Finally, the centerpieces and decorations on the head table were from the bride’s grandmother, who passed away last year.

We love the Blue Ridge Mountain Club! It couldn’t be more picturesque and it, along with the fog and rain in the morning followed by a starry night, allowed us to get gorgeous photos of this glorious couple and the many people people who came from hither and yon to be there to celebrate with them.

This reception had the highest energy we’ve seen and photographed all year. The dance floor never cleared thanks to DJ Erok, whom we would highly recommend. Ages young and old partied well into the night. We loved that when they did need a break, the outdoor fire-pit was close by and the stars were out.

Of course we can: THANK YOU SO MUCH!

From Ryan and myself, we’d like to thank Katie & Josh for allowing us to be a witness to their special day. Good Luck, you two! We love you!

Caroline & Andy’s NC Mountain Destination Wedding Photography

We are always honored when we find out that a couple contacts us because of a referral from a past wedding client. Caroline and Andy took the advice from not one, but two of our Bride and Groom couples and contacted us all the way from Boston to capture their NC Mountain destination wedding photography.

The entire day was a great blending of two different families and cultures with nods to both sprinkled throughout the wedding ceremony and in to the wedding reception.

We started the day off with a “first look” with Caroline and Andy and rolled right through the family photos and wedding party, so that after the wedding ceremony, we could get to the wedding reception and photograph a  few more wedding photos before starting the party for the rest of the evening.

The interior of Elkin Presbyterian Church is gorgeous and made for a perfect setting for the wedding. With Caroline raised in the Presbyterian church, and Andy raised in the Jewish faith, every effort was made in combining elements from both backgrounds, including closing the ceremony with the kiss, then the breaking of the glass before walking out of the church as husband and wife.

The day took a bit of a twist between their wedding photos after the ceremony and the introductions at the wedding reception. We received a phone call from Caroline’s sister and the Maid of Honor where she let us know that they were going to make a detour before the reception, to the Emergency Room. Yes, the E.R.! Earlier in the day, Caroline did as any Bride would do, and placed her engagement ring on her right hand for the wedding ceremony. But with the heat and humidity and nerves, her finger swelled to the point where the ring would not come off and began to cut off the circulation in her finger. The good news is, after a brief experience in the E.R. where the Bride and Groom were the center of attention, the ring was removed undamaged and they were off to Old Beau Golf and Country Club in Roaring Gap NC to celebrate their marriage.

And party they did. The dance floor stayed hopping all night thanks to All Around Raleigh DJ. At one point late in the evening, Andy and Caroline were each hoisted up in a chair for the traditional Jewish Hora, or Wedding Chair Dance, and danced around the room surrounded by friends and family.

sprinting through spring 2013 photos | pixels on paper wedding photography and portrait photography

We are so far behind on blogging already this year. Honestly it’s because blogging is very low on our priority list. The 2013 Spring photography season is here and we are in full swing at a fast passed sprint. Because of that, rather than writing blogs, it’s more important to us to provide excellent customer service to our clients and make sure their photos are being edited, PreView Sessions are being had, wall art and albums are being created and delivered in a fast turnaround time. All those reasons aside, we know our followers still want to see more large images and read about all the wedding photos we’ve been taking and the portrait photography we’ve been creating. Just to give you a little taste of what we’ve been up to, here are some peeks at what you will hopefully soon be seeing in full posts on the blog.

We weren’t available to photograph Alisha’s wedding photos but that didn’t stop her from using Pixels On Paper to photograph her Bridal Portraits which we uniquely styled with some of our collection of antiques and photographed right outside our Wilkesboro, NC portrait studio.

Kristie and Trey will be getting married in July. Their engagement photos gave us an opportunity to see how comfortable they were in front of our camera and get them use to being photographed before the big day. This is another portrait session outside our studio. It’s great to be a photographer in the NC Mountains!

This Asheville NC wedding photography is from Kaitlyn and Denny’s amazing and rainy wedding day at family-owned Raymonds Garden Center. The garden center provided a beautiful backdrop for wedding photography with all the flowers we could possibly imagine. A lot of rain didn’t keep us from getting lots of wedding photos.

Pixels On Paper were the Charlotte wedding photographers for Rich and Amanda in 2009. Now they are expecting their first child and we are blessed to be providing them with Maternity photography and newborn photography as their family grows. They made the trip from Ft. This Bridal portrait photo is still a secret since the Bride’s wedding day has not yet arrived. It’s so much fun to integrate into Bride photos something as special to her as the years of dance that have been a part of her life. It also gives us a great opportunity for creative photography.
