Mother’s Day

I recently came across an article that listed some of the best things about being a mom, and my mind reeled. There are too many to name. On nearly the eve of another Mother’s Day, I wanted to share a few quotes along with some of my favorite shots of moms and their kids taken by Pixels over the years. Outdoors, dressed up or down, laughing and exploring, these are some pretty adorable kids and spectacular moms.

“The smell of a freshly bathed child.” Finley’s bath time makes me lose track of time. I love those moments and the sweetness of his wet, red curls and warmth in his pajamas. It’s the best.

“Getting to mold a little human being.” I love this part of being a mom even when it’s tough, and I am definitely grateful that I get a chance to learn from other moms going through each stage along with me. Some of my dearest and most important friendships are with moms I’ve met before and after Finley was born. I realized that I’d joined a tribe that understood me, love our family and could lift me up or ground me.

“Being a safe space for my child.” Even on the toughest days, Moms still hold space and energy to let their children come to them for care, listening and comfort. I don’t see an end to this. I speak to my mother all the time and even as the topics change and the worries are different, she’s always right there. My hope is that my son knows that when he enters the wide world of independence, his dad and I are always here for him.

“Finding joy in simple things.” I am transported daily to my own childhood when I watch Finley. The craziest stuff will light him up and that lights me up too. Keeping it simple and about love is my goal. I’m especially appreciative of the multigenerational impact of families on each new member.

Call your mom this weekend, and if you can see her, see her. Love her. Thank her.

Happy Mother’s Day.

Portraits for Mother’s Day

This short video cracked us up, because in at least one of these clips you can see your own mom, perhaps. And don’t freak out: the video is from a couple of years ago. Mother’s Day is May 13 this year so you’ve got a couple of months to think about how great it would be to schedule mother’s day portraits or family portraits to give to her. You KNOW it goes without saying that the two things your mom wants more than anything are gifts that become mementos and time with her.

Moms….I love mine so much it hurts. She’s my best friend and we laugh, learn, garden and unpack the world together. Now I am one. Finley has made me so aware of why mothers say and do all that they do. It’s humbling and it’s wild and Ryan and I feel like our hearts are going to explode some days due to the amount of unexpected joy and revelation he’s brought into our lives.

Thanks so much to Suzie of Suzie Guerrant Photography. She’s a talent, a mom and a light!

Holidays are daily if you get the “National Calendar” eblasts that celebrate everything from National Peanut Butter Day to National Tell a Fairy Tale Day to National Sleeping in Public Day. [No, I did not make those up.] But Mother’s Day, ya’ll…….. it’s really real and it’s really important. If you think about everything your mom has done for you, you’ll call her at some point today. Even five minutes of “updates and I love yous” will make a huge difference in her day. And she deserves it.

BUT, … these photos of her growing up were taken especially because her mom wanted to mark the changes in each of her children before they left the house. Maddie has a sister and brother (Paiton and Quinton respectively) and we photographed them too.

Of course, family photos as Mother’s Day gifts are a natural, but we also do multi-generation photos and those are not only wonderful framed and hung but are perfect for cards and gifts later around other holidays.

Love Your Mama! | Celebrating Motherhood

No matter what it looks like, motherhood is profound. Mothers declare – with this first amazing act of carrying a child and then giving birth to it – that they will forever share their food, put their immediate needs aside, hold their child’s head above the rising water, look for sacred lost things, and provide comfort, perspective, structure, laughter, physical and emotional affection, joy and support till the very end.

I’ve heard that a mother’s job is to be a witness to whoever your child is and turns out to be. They are not you, just of you. Kahil Gibran, said that right? You are the bow and your child is the arrow being shot out into a world ready to be discovered. What gets them out there into that wide world armed with humility, confidence and strength is steady mother love.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mom’s out there. If your mom is still with us, call her, take her to brunch, go for a walk with her, invite her over and cook her a meal. But most importantly, tell her thank you.
Morning Song
Love set you going like a fat gold watch.
The midwife slapped your footsoles, and your bald cry
Took its place among the elements.
Our voices echo, magnifying your arrival. New statue.
In a drafty museum, your nakedness
Shadows our safety. We stand round blankly as walls.
I’m no more your mother
Than the cloud that distills a mirror to reflect its own slow
Effacement at the wind’s hand.
All night your moth-breath
Flickers among the flat pink roses. I wake to listen:
A far sea moves in my ear.
One cry, and I stumble from bed, cow-heavy and floral
In my Victorian nightgown.
Your mouth opens clean as a cat’s. The window square
Whitens and swallows its dull stars. And now you try
Your handful of notes;
The clear vowels rise like balloons.
