Outdoor & Day in the Life Portraits

We love outdoor photo sessions during the warm months and summer provides plenty of opportunities for these. Yes! We can and will socially distance for the session, but that is not a hindrance when you decide you’d like some day in the life documentary photographs or portraits. Below are some favorite shots from summertime in the outdoors with some documentary sessions thrown in for good measure.

Family summer wrap up

Labor Day is just days away and that truly signals the end of summer. Back to school, last family trips and cookouts and time to hunker down. For photographers, August is a slow time for the obvious reason: it’s too hot to stand around having your photos taken. I have a pal whose Uncle Max likes to quip: “you know why Southerners talk so slowly? Because it’s too hot to do anything quickly.” You take my point.

For Ryan and me it was a busy month at home and really all about family, Finley, and food from our garden. This month has been a blessing, even with a tree landing on our house, and I’ll get to that in a minute.

One summer highlight was a camping trip to Sparta – an annual summer thing and really an any season thing for us when our schedules allow. These trips have grown and that is an understatement. For this last one, there were 25 of us and the ratio of kid to adult was 50/50. I never would have dreamed several years ago that the profile of those trips would have changed so much and so much for the better. We love this group of crazies so much. Lots of wandering, swimming, chatting, snacking and soaking each other up.

We also took short trips, went to some outdoor shows and I was able to get down to the Atlanta Market for World of Prom with Kelly Shumate – the owner of Bridal Traditions and dear friend. It was a working trip and I loved it!

We also kept busy with our garden and boy, was the harvest worth the upkeep. Finley and our pup, Chelsea enjoyed eating items right out of the garden and I cooked, canned, shared and am now wondering about expanding it.

Our one Debbie Downer moment was a storm that came crashing through while I was in Atlanta and it caused a tree to position itself, uninvited I might add, in our kitchen. Ryan and I are DIY’ers to the core, but this is something that is being handled by others and I will be glad when it’s over. Too much life happens in our yard, porch and certainly the kitchen. I need it fully functional!

As we wrap up the summer like everyone else, we’re looking ahead to more commercial work, fall family portraits and we will begin thinking about (not nagging! so don’t panic), but thinking about the holidays and all that comes with that. The sooner that you start planning, the happier you’ll be. For now though, watching Finley play with his new flashlight while grilling fruits and veggies will do for me, thank you very much.

Driver Family Outdoor Portrait Photos

Pixels On Paper Photographers Driver family outdoor spring peach orchard wilkesboro nc portrait photo

Back to our favorite orchards we went on April 6th to photograph Mom Meghan and her daughter Paisley (nicknamed “P”). “P” got dressed UP for the occasion in purple tulle and a big floral bow and sash. The dress’s skirt alone would turn any girl green with envy. It was full and she wore it, not the other way around. The dress was a gift from friend and mother of 5 (FIVE) boys, Stacy Eldridge. Stacy is a long time client and friend of ours and made the referral to Meghan. I have to say, it is SO fun watching her with Paisley after being surrounded by and raising boys for so long. Stacey is Paisley’s biggest fan.

Meghan is a single Mom, who works two full time jobs and manages to hold down the fort and make ends meet and while filling the roles of both Mom & Dad.

I think I’m probably the biggest fan of single parents, because at the end of the day, what they are doing is what we’re all trying to do – create a healthy happy family. And this mother-daughter duo is only about a year old, but there’s no mistaking that they are a family.

Single moms blow my mind. I can only imagine their level of stress and exhaustion as they navigate everything parents navigate, but as a solo act. I really wanted this photo shoot to be about spoiling them both, so we made sure that Meghan felt beautiful, loved and supported while the divine Miss P got to run around like a princess in her own kingdom of peach blossoms. The ultimate goal though was to capture images that Meghan would treasure for the rest of her life. The results are glorious, vibrant and beautiful.

The afternoon and evening of shooting were a complete blast. Stacy and her partner Michael were on the scene to help wrangle the almost one-year-old, so there was a lot of laughter between shots. The weather was gorgeous and there was so much love in the air. This goes in my book as a favorite session and I hope to have Paisley in front of my lens often as we watch her grow into the beautiful strong woman I know she’s going to be.

SUMMMMMMMER!!!

Summer 1963. Artwork by Roy McKie.

Some days, this is all I want to feel like. And I find that I’m grateful every time I do. It’s crazy-happy, fireflies, unbridled silliness, rocking in a rocking chair at twilight, watching the sun burn off the dew over morning coffee, wandering barefooted to check the garden for new veggies …… summer. This is the last summer Ryan and I will have as a family of 2. It’s precious in that it’s our last and it’s beautiful in the anticipation of our son joining us.

I’ve been thinking of the photos we take each summer of families, weddings, babies, etc and how they are unmistakable. It’s as if every person has that feeling that Roy McKie drew in the early sixties. We have another month or 2 of summer to celebrate, so whatever your plans, breathe it in. Let yourself go sock and shoeless, take a beat to feel the sun’s heat and the relief of A/C, as we southerners do. Here’s to summer!

I mean, seriously. Look at little man Brock. You know that he knows summer is awesome. He’s practically applauding it.
Pixels on Paper Photography Summer 2016 BirthdaysAnd so are we! Last year, on my birthday, we were having a summer celebration. We did again yesterday to celebrate Ryan’s 40th. We had no idea then that we’d be preggers at this point. Summer is special, you guys. We love you and hope yours is perfection!
