Portraits: Plan your year!

Yep. You nailed it. I miss you. All of you. I miss the giggling and group hugs that come with family portrait sessions. I miss the waving as we all arrive on site – at the overlook, the property, the park, the orchard, campus or cabin retreat. I miss changing my lenses amid the casual chaos of family dynamics.

Don’t get me wrong. I’ve been plenty busy, but with the holidays over, and the temps around freezing most of the time, this girl just wants to hibernate. The wilderness bear in me takes over and I am inclined to cook, bake, read, create art projects, and sleep exclusively. As long as I can keep these boys I love nourished and healthy……… that’s winter for me.

At some point though, I peep over flannel sheets and think: I MISS EVERYBODY! So let’s talk about planning your photo sessions for this year and find each other again!

  • Are there members of your clan who are graduating from high school or college this year?
  • Is someone expecting a baby and perhaps would benefit from our one year baby packages or a maternity shoot – or both?
  • Are you blessed enough to have multiple generations in your family and want to capture everyone before the young scatter and the older folks find it harder to get around?
  • Is there a milestone birthday, anniversary or celebration planned for 2022 that you want to commemorate with a fun photo shoot. Believe me, we get it. There are daily distractions, but these moments matter. Consider planning a portrait session.

Kids! If you haven’t had portraits of your children with their siblings in a while, consider doing it this year. Any season, indoors or out, with or without bows and costume changes, we can make it happen.

Think about the year ahead and contact us to schedule or with your ideas. Let’s do this in 2022!

We love family portraits whether they are set in the studio, the great outdoors, a specific location like the mountains or high country, or on our property in our outdoor portrait garden. Pixels on Paper photographs newborns and families, special events and portraits  of all kinds in our Wilkesboro, NC studio. We would be honored to meet with you, learn about you and your family and be a part of taking special portraits that will become, we hope, family heirlooms.

Wilkes Community Partnership for Children Christmas 2021 Event

At the end of last year, during the holiday season, Pixels on Paper teamed up with the Wilkes Community Partnership for Children to photograph their “Sugar Plum Fairy Christmas Event.”
For years, I have raved about this organization to anyone who will listen. They do so much for children in our community, and our Finley has reaped the rewards for years.

This event was in held in Wilkesboro and was free and open to all children.

But first, a little bit about the Wilkes County Partnership for Children. This Smart Start program prepares children for school and provides school readiness, child safety, and child development programs to families in our area. This organization also has a diaper pantry, Imagination Library, reading programs, parent support groups and a bevvy of resources that families, teachers and other community members can readily use. I cannot say enough about this org and urge you guys to check them out.

This event brought out the goods! While Finley ran for Mayor (this kid loves to chat up the 2 and 4 legged creatures equally), we captured images of Santa & Mrs. Claus, all of the arts & craft activities, cookie decorating, and time with miniature horses. We forget with all the screens and the speed of info how nice it is to stroll while chatting with neighbors and not feeling in a hurry. This was THAT day, and I loved it.

Walker’s Six Months portrait photos

Walker Tibbett has stolen my heart. There — I’ve said it on the record. And let members of the unofficial jury know that I make ZERO APOLOGIES. He’s delicious. Prior to his portrait session, I worked with his parents, Brooke and Joey, on the set in our studio, discussing color palette and textures for his 6 month portrait session. I want to say that we nailed it with some beautifully grained wood backdrops, some cute suspenders, a couple of hats and that FACE!

This kid……… his laugh, his smile, …….honestly, I would still be photographing him at this moment were it not for the fact that he had to go home with his parents, and I have my own son and husband to care for. But gracious, he is cute.

Before there was a delightful little Walker (with a whole 180 days +/- under his belt), we photographed his equally wonderful parents – pre child. Their engagement portraits shot in Blowing Rock, with their sweet dog Cisco, are some of my favorites. Pixels also shot their wedding at the Gambill Estate, and of course, once pregnant with Walker, we were on a roll: maternity portraits with Brooke in the orchards, and newborn portraits (I could already tell, this kid is a heart thief!!). We LOVE watching families grow and discover the next chapter on this crazy journey.

How do you make Christmas magic? Add a Santa hat. Seriously. Everything should be so easy.

Merry Christmas, Tibbetts! We adore you guys and cannot wait to see you again soon.

Finley and Jonathan – a bond is formed and lessons are learned

How do you write a blog through tears of gratitude and hope? We’ll see I guess. Get out your score cards…. and I’ll tell you about the bond my son has formed with Jonathan, a driver for Pepsi Co.

As part of raising a toddler into a civilized, empathetic human (and let’s be honest – as a way to mix it up and get both errands done and distractions created for a boy who doesn’t want to sit still sometimes), Finley and I run errands on Tuesdays. Part of our route is to hit Dollar General stores in our area.

Months ago during one of our weekly outings, Finley and I kept criss-crossing the store with the Pepsi distribution/delivery guy. We would zig to get out of his way, and he would zag and apologize. After a few bouts of this do-si-do, I told him to stop apologizing. His name is Jonathan and he and Finley hit it off because my boy likes to work, loves an activity that requires boy strength, and if a large vehicle is involved…….. forget about it. Jonathan’s job hit all the right notes, plus Finley is a talker and especially loves to tell everyone about tractors. We finish our shopping and Finley wished Jonathan a good day.

The story doesn’t end there. Jonathan also delivers to the Dollar General where my mom works and that same day mentions to my mom that his day had been made earlier by meeting this cute redheaded kid out shopping with his mom. He described the encounter and how funny and sweet it was, and my mom said, “wait…. it wouldn’t happen to be this child” and produces a picture of Finley from her phone. Jonathan is flabbergasted and so another connection is born. Later, my mom tells me that Finley has a fan in the Pepsi delivery guy.

Well, this goes on for many months. We see Jonathan on our Tuesday route and he begins to show Finley how to stack and organize, tells him all about his truck and Finley is dying to help. Now, they are co-workers and at this point, friends and neighbors in our town have heard about and love this story of the friendly Pepsi guy and the talkative redhead looking for a side hustle, if not a new buddy.

What makes this more than a pleasant encounter is the fact that this busy man – on a timed schedule and on a route to many stores – took a little bit of his time to be present with Finley. It is said that it takes a village to raise a child and I don’t believe it’s just about grandparents, teachers and people from church. This man – this once stranger, without over-intellectualizing and without agenda, had invested in my son. He prioritized both his job – which he does so well in our community – and the curiosity of my child. I kept thinking, as others in the community have, that this man from Pepsi is an example of what can be right in this world.

The capper is that Jonathan went into his own pocket to make sure that Apprentice Finley got a uniform for Christmas. He had a shirt and cap made for Finley to wear “during his shift.” Theirs is the sweetest, most innocent bond. How do I not thank God for that – for Jonathan? We live in a cynical world and taking time to care about another person’s child, to notice the little stuff and to be present is a gift for which there is simply no yard stick.

This isn’t just a story about my kid; it’s a story about community. As much as we are fixated on our technology, isolated through circumstances or choice, we are still a people yearning for engagement and connection. Caring about your neighbor matters. Caring about the generation that is still unformed but right on your heels matters. Showing patience and graciousness when you have a deadline and a million other micro-decisions to make … friends THAT is a demonstration that Jonathan is teaching my son.

Finley learning about customer service.

As we creep up to 2022, my wish is that we find and celebrate the Jonathans next year, that WE make an effort to BE a Jonathan to someone. We can both be and admire those people, and I think this is a resolution worth putting our backs into. Happy New Year to you all!

Minick Family Christmas Photos 2021

Another opportunity to run around downtown North Wilkesboro, play among the lights, and do it with family: YES PLEASE!

If you’ve followed this blog for more than a year, then you know that we are not only familial with the Minicks, but we’ve shot more portrait sessions with them than there is time to count. Engagement, wedding, maternity, newborn, 6-month, birthdays, family portraits outside and in our studio, we have images of Ryan and Rachel and kids Amelia and Matt that number in the thousands. This Christmas, we added more and this time, the children were the stars.

Amelia and Matt Matt hammed it up around the lights and holiday features, jumped, danced, played and chased each other. I love these joyful and more dynamic shoots during the holidays with kids. Everyone’s ready to celebrate and that’s difficult while sitting still, if you ask me.

Wishing the Minicks – and you all – THE MERRIEST OF CHRISTMASES and the most joyful holiday season.
