Walker’s Six Months portrait photos

Walker Tibbett has stolen my heart. There — I’ve said it on the record. And let members of the unofficial jury know that I make ZERO APOLOGIES. He’s delicious. Prior to his portrait session, I worked with his parents, Brooke and Joey, on the set in our studio, discussing color palette and textures for his 6 month portrait session. I want to say that we nailed it with some beautifully grained wood backdrops, some cute suspenders, a couple of hats and that FACE!

This kid……… his laugh, his smile, …….honestly, I would still be photographing him at this moment were it not for the fact that he had to go home with his parents, and I have my own son and husband to care for. But gracious, he is cute.

Before there was a delightful little Walker (with a whole 180 days +/- under his belt), we photographed his equally wonderful parents – pre child. Their engagement portraits shot in Blowing Rock, with their sweet dog Cisco, are some of my favorites. Pixels also shot their wedding at the Gambill Estate, and of course, once pregnant with Walker, we were on a roll: maternity portraits with Brooke in the orchards, and newborn portraits (I could already tell, this kid is a heart thief!!). We LOVE watching families grow and discover the next chapter on this crazy journey.

How do you make Christmas magic? Add a Santa hat. Seriously. Everything should be so easy.

Merry Christmas, Tibbetts! We adore you guys and cannot wait to see you again soon.

Let’s Celebrate Summer with Photos

For us, summer is about more outdoor time, playing in water, eating from the garden, camping and capturing images of our fabulous clients in their own little slices of heaven. July is here and while we’re in quarantine, of sorts, the yard and the fireflies and the sprinklers and picnics are calling.

A Photographer’s Inspirations

Or I could call this blog, “merely a glance” at my inspirations. They are varied and plentiful. That’s rights, kids – I’m doing another little blog flashback today.

My brain’s slideshow of memories, my new normal (think: I gotta 2 year old in the house!!), my priorities and goals have me feeling contemplative. And the good news is that I’ve been renewed by this thinking about what inspires me and what I love about my crazy life. That’s not a bad place to be. I’d rather feel hopeful, even when I’m exhausted, than joyless. “Did I get it all done today?” NOPE. But, but did my husband and son feel loved? Yes. Did I share a giggle with my mom over the phone? I did. Was I available to give a pep talk to my girlfriend in Asheville? Yup! Days like that when I am productive AND RELATIONAL get marked with an “A” grade and I call it good.

As I’ve mentioned in recent blogs, Ryan and I will be focusing more on relationships and the kind of photography that allows those to thrive: day in the life, family, children, community, and those milestones that may not be first on the list in people’s minds. We’ll be tapering off certain types of photography to make room for the abundance of other work that brings us joy and keeps us sane.

I’ll be sharing more in the weeks ahead, but for now, I want to take a look back at a blog I wrote a while back titled Things I Love to Think About. It still makes me smile.

I hope you all will do the same today. What inspires you? What do you love to think about? Spend a minute in that place in your mind once you’ve identified it…. even a minute. You’ll feel better.

Schedule Your Christmas Portraits 2019

Season’s Greetings! <ducking>
I know some of you are decidedly not ready to go into holiday mode, so consider this just a gentle nudge. At Pixels, I am in the process of decorating our portrait studio for the 2019 Christmas season. It’s going to be gorgeous, if I say so myself, and when I’m a little closer to completion, I’ll start sharing the color palette and some details.

Your task, should you choose to undertake this adventure, dear reader – AND YOU SHOULD – is to get out your calendar. It is time to schedule your portrait session and time to order cards and gifts.

For $125, we will provide 5 digital images for families with up to 3 children. This includes the printing rights along with the option to purchase prints, cards, and gifts. Pets and additional children or family members are welcome for an additional $25.
Our fee is due when you make your reservation. Once again, I saw no need to raise the price. We want you all to make this an easy and affordable priority this year. These portraits last a lifetime, you know.

For those of you who want a more documentary feel for your holiday portraits, we recommend a family in-home session. These have become really popular over the last 4 years and we love doing them too. Parents want to capture what it looks like “doing the holidays” with their kids and family members and this doesn’t mean you have to have your entire house redecorated or even that pulled together. I PROMISE. We just want you to be present, focused on the holiday and enjoying yourself.

Whether your tree is decorated yet or not, whether you’ve figured out an activity yet or not, whether you even know yet how you’re going to celebrate: don’t worry. Just give it some thought. At home photos are special.

Barrett Turns One

Some photo shoot themes have to be crafted and developed out of thin air. And others are a natural because of family hobbies, vocations, passions, whatever. For Barrett Spillman’s one year portraits and cake smash, the choice of baseball was a home run….. I know. I’m ducking as I type, but this stuff writes itself, you guys!

Mom Elisabeth told me her idea of “MVP of the Year” and to “run with it” and that’s exactly what I did. Both her father and her husband Isaac, play baseball, so this theme felt like a fitting tribute to them and a fun way to celebrate their one year old.

I love doing an outdoor cake smash but rarely get to because many parents prefer to photograph them indoors. Fortunately, these parents weren’t at all worried about their little rookie getting dirty.

We adore Elisabeth and Isaac and have photographed their engagement, bridal, wedding, Barrett’s newborn portraits and At Home Christmas. So it’s nice to feel relaxed and ready to play with faces we know well. This family is one of those who’ve hired us from the beginning and appreciate the continuity we capture through photo sessions over the years.

Now for some baseball! Thanks to our Parks and Rec director here in Wilkesboro who met with me and gave me full access to newly refurbished baseball fields that were otherwise locked down for the season. It’s hard to have a baseball shoot without the right setting. And thanks to my dear friend Ashley Shumate, the busiest baseball Mom I know. She let me borrow all the baseball gear to bring my vision to life for the Spillmans.

Barrett loved being outside, in the dug out, and on home plate and played the role of MVP as if he were born to it! His first birthday cake was a reward, so he was game for just about anything we needed from him. He was a good sport!

Those expressions during the first taste of icing are always priceless and rewarding.

We also photographed some studio portraits where Barrett wore an outfit that was a family heirloom. It’s been passed down and worn by other babies in the family turning one before him. Hence the need for these shots to be indoors. I wanted to preserve and protect it for future generations. That and it was 100% wool! To hot for outside.

Happy Birthday, Young Man!! We’ll see you soon, I hope – whether you’re a sports star or not, we’re fans of yours.
