My love of details in photography
As we straddle the seasons (what North Carolinians know as “my new daffodils invited the last snow” season), I’m noticing the details everywhere. It got me thinking about the details I love to capture in my photographs. There is always a subject – always a story being told – but it’s the details that we hover over.
In that vein – here are some favorites. Happy Spring, gang! Don’t worry – you’ll get that hour back one way or another.
Engagements
Engagement portraits speak to love and the anticipation of your public union. But for me, these images are transformed when I can capture the small glances, the body English, the closeness between the almost married. These images take my breath away still.
Maternity
Maternity portraits are some of my favorites. Mothers in that mode of nesting and at their most happy, full and ripe. But I always encourage the father or father-to-be to take part in front of the camera. The union of the parents always comes through in the images and the details of care and excitement come through.
Newborns
There aren’t enough blog posts to contain my favorite images of babies being …………. babies.

Portraits: Plan your year!
Yep. You nailed it. I miss you. All of you. I miss the giggling and group hugs that come with family portrait sessions. I miss the waving as we all arrive on site – at the overlook, the property, the park, the orchard, campus or cabin retreat. I miss changing my lenses amid the casual chaos of family dynamics.
Don’t get me wrong. I’ve been plenty busy, but with the holidays over, and the temps around freezing most of the time, this girl just wants to hibernate. The wilderness bear in me takes over and I am inclined to cook, bake, read, create art projects, and sleep exclusively. As long as I can keep these boys I love nourished and healthy……… that’s winter for me.
At some point though, I peep over flannel sheets and think: I MISS EVERYBODY! So let’s talk about planning your photo sessions for this year and find each other again!
- Are there members of your clan who are graduating from high school or college this year?
- Is someone expecting a baby and perhaps would benefit from our one year baby packages or a maternity shoot – or both?
- Are you blessed enough to have multiple generations in your family and want to capture everyone before the young scatter and the older folks find it harder to get around?
- Is there a milestone birthday, anniversary or celebration planned for 2022 that you want to commemorate with a fun photo shoot. Believe me, we get it. There are daily distractions, but these moments matter. Consider planning a portrait session.
Kids! If you haven’t had portraits of your children with their siblings in a while, consider doing it this year. Any season, indoors or out, with or without bows and costume changes, we can make it happen.

As we all take the deep breath before “the Season” is in full swing, we’re also making lists of people we love and what they might love to have this year for the holidays. Fall Family Portraits
The leaves are rapidly changing and families are pulling out their sweaters, boots, scarves and hats and engaging us for fall family photos. It’s a gorgeous time of year and with the holidays upon us soon, you can be sure that it’s time to create wall portraits, photo holiday cards, calendars and gifts. It’s also ALWAYS a good time to capture memories.

Baby’s First Year Photography Packages
We recently reminded you fine people out there about our Referral Program, and Pixels clients should take advantage of it! But now is also a great time to remind those of you who are thinking about starting a family, newly engaged or just married. We have a package created just for you that nearly all of our maternity or new parents avail themselves of: the One Year Baby Package. I chose a beloved family for whom we captured maternity, newborn, 6 month and finally the first birthday of their adorable daughter.
Our package covers newborn portraits, a 6-month portrait session and then a One Year Birthday session. Maternity portraits can be added if you desire. Even if Pixels did not photograph your engagement shots, your wedding or any other portraits, you can still take advantage of this package. Parents tell us over and over again how grateful they are that they made this a priority. These images make not only great memories and heirlooms, but baby and family portraits are perfect gifts for grandparents or relatives. Often clients create canvases for their children’s bedrooms or for the family wall of images. Ryan and I will even create and install these.
