Luka’s Newborn Photos
In J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan, the title character says, “Little boys should never be sent to bed. They always wake up a day older.”
Sadly that’s too true, and moms everywhere will tell you they pray for a time when their sons can be more independent, while they quietly mourn it too.

This little bundle is Luka and he was in our studio with big brother Conner, Mom and Dad, Sierra and Dakota this summer to celebrate his arrival to planet earth. For this session, he had not had many nights of sleep, or time to grow up, so he was still the teeny boy we hoped he’d be.
This image above of these two boys makes me want to cry. They are so snuggled in and Conner loved having his new little brother in his arms. Oh, Lord, may that brotherly love continue forever.
Because Mama Sierra wanted some similar shots of her boys, I went back to sweet Conner’s newborn portraits from 2015 and set up Luka’s so that I could create side by sides. Luka is on the left and Conner is on the right. I know!! These two are more delicious than words can convey.
Having this crew in our studio allowed us to control props, diaper changes and temperature, but everything went smoothly and I was even able to use some new “boyish” props and colors in the mix.
We love these studio sessions where everyone can relax in a controled (mostly!) environment and we can capture a family with their new member.
Welcome to the World, Little Luka. 10 fingers, 10 toes, big eyes and soft skin: you’re already a classic.
We love family portraits whether they are set in the studio, the great outdoors, a specific location like the mountains or high country, or on our property in our outdoor portrait garden. An Intimate Museum Wedding
So how exactly does one choose the NC Museum of Art in Raleigh, NC as the place to get married? Well, you walk yours dogs around the grounds, look at sculptures and fall in love with a place kind of like you fell in love with each other. Familiarity and beauty: works every time.
Charlene Gourlay and Jon Rathbun were married at the Museum in June of this year and while the ceremony was scheduled to be outside, the weather moved us in … and then back out. There was no harm done, because it was beautiful inside and we were still able to capture the couple and their entire wedding party outside around the various windows, pools, walkways and green spaces.

There were so many beautiful spots to grab photos of these two, and while we were new to the spot, we’d done our homework and it was an embarrassment of riches. Their dream of a wedding planner – Morgan – ran everything like a Swiss timepiece. He was so familiar with the Museum that he gave us plenty of extra ideas and tips.
Some couples don’t want to do a “first look” when the bride shows herself to the groom prior to the ceremony, but this couple chose to because the setting was so gorgeous. It did NOT take away from Jon’s reaction when he saw Charlene walking down the aisle.
One particularly sweet and comic touch was the couple’s ring bearer. He donned sunglasses and showed that he was the day’s “tight security,” complete with ear piece and briefcase.
Since Charlene’s father is no longer with us, they did something extremely touching as part of their ceremony. Charlene walked halfway down the aisle and then Jon walked the rest of the way to fetch her and escort her to the pastor. It wasn’t just charming, it was really tender.
I hope that urban brides will remember that not every wedding needs to be in a church, and that places of interest – with lots of art, sculpture and open spaces – make great reception locations. The weather would have been described as dodgy in just about any other location, but because they selected the museum, it was impossible to take a bad shot. Gorgeous couple and a perfect spot.
The reception was indoors and the details of art made it special and really cool for capturing images that will last a lifetime. It was an easy-going and fun reception with lots of dancing, music and a great DJ, and plenty of mingling and listening to stories from the family and friends present. This is always such a fun part of shooting any wedding – learning more about the couple from those who truly know them and adore them.
Charlene and Jon made their great escape using glowsticks and it was as beautiful as the rest of the day. Blue light and lots of love and a kiss before they left to go start the next big chapter of their lives.
Congratulations and Best Wishes to you both. We loved being a part of your big day.

The York family’s maternity photos
Yes, this photo session included husband and kiddos! We love shoots of the expectant mother glowing and showing off her belly, but we also appreciate capturing the group that will be this kid’s welcoming committee. Mitch, Lindsey and their young sons, Tate & Turner met us in the woods near a stream to celebrate some pretty fantastic news for this family.
Both sides of Mitch and Lindsey’s families are largely populated by boys. For whatever reason, there just aren’t that many daughters born into the mix. So when the couple found out that their third child was a little girl, let’s just say that there was great joy.

We met up with this crew on a VERY hot Memorial Day, but planned ahead as moms with boys will do. Since we brought our son Finley to the shoot, Lindsey and I decided that when we were done for the day, we would let the boys play in the creek and just get dirty and wet! And they did.
Tate and Turner had some adjusting to do to get ready for a little sister (the Yorks greeted Miss Tinleigh in late June and you’ll meet her soon!), but on this day it was about fun in the woods, something this family thrives on. We LOVE interacting with families who are now friends so despite the heat, we lived it up and got lovely shots of mother, father and kiddos.
Mitch and Lindsey bought the one year baby package, but this session was free because they took advantage of our referral program. We’re not kidding, folks: we honor these and love it when people take advantage of saving AND getting heirloom portraits.
We also captured some absolutely stunning belly photos of Lindsey, but these guys are private and have kept those to themselves. Moms: take note. If you would like photos of you in your 7th, 8th or 9th month with a bare belly, we take those all the time. We won’t share them with the world without asking!
Keep your eyes peeled for the blog about their new little girl! She is a living doll.

Baby’s One Year Package
If you’ve ever heard a friend, relative or even yourself lamenting the fact that you didn’t get more photos of specific milestones, then take note. Pixels offers a “Baby Package” that we thoughtfully put together so that you’d never look back in regret. You don’t have to figure out which portraits you want in order to cobble together your own package. We’ve done this for you.

Newborn portraits are first, of course. You cannot have a Baby Package with no baby. Labor is over and now comes the fun part: raising this little angel through the first year. Don’t worry; you can do it and so too can you get those newborn portraits taken. Part of our studio is designed specifically for these sessions, with a lovely and private place to rest, nurse and change. We suggest that you bring in your new bundle sometime during their first 10 days. We make it easy on you! This isn’t our first rodeo.

At six months, we bring families back in for more portraits. Babies are ready to sit up – making them perfect models – but they are not yet walking, so we can get them alert and happy, curious and surrounded by siblings, toys, lights or in a theme. At six months, they are incredibly responsive and some of the best portraits we get are at these sessions.

At one year, it’s time for a party, so families who buy this package set up cake smashes, celebrate on location, at our studio, with a theme, costume changes – you name it. Kiddos at one year may or may not be walking, but they are alert, are showing their personalities and are ready for their close ups.

Some expecting moms don’t think that they will want these, but we always hear from those who choose a maternity session that they are so glad they did. We recommend the seventh month and we will not only pose you in the most flattering lighting and angles (don’t stress), but we’ll also make sure that you’re completely comfortable and cared for.

For newborn, six month and one year sessions, clients receive a 10 x 10 custom designed album that includes all of your favorite images, as well as an 8 x 10 portrait from each session at the end of the year. If you choose to add a maternity shoot, it’s a minimal upgrade and completely worth it. The baby package also comes with a 20% discount on all card orders, so you can send announcements or holiday cards using these images and maximize your package.

We also offer two other packages. The Baby & Baby which includes a one hour maternity session, a 2 hour newborn session and a 5 x 7 from each session. You can also schedule a one hour Baby Bump or Newborn session.
All of our wedding clients receive a free newborn session and/or credit toward a newborn session can be applied to the package purchase.
We hope you’ll call us if your curious, have questions or want to chat about the news that you’re expecting (CONGRATULATIONS!) and work out best dates.
