Graphic Design work for Colt’s Hearts of Comfort | Pixels On Paper designs brochures and notecards

This project was a personal one and we felt so privileged to be included in the promotion of Colt’s Hearts of Comfort. Parents Shana Greene Williams is a life-long family friend of mine and when she and her husband Thomas lost their son Colt at 38 1/2 weeks, only a few days before his birth, they were naturally devastated, confused, angry and left wondering “why?” These two Christ-followers, however, did not lean on their own understanding, but built on their grief. From the loss of Colt, they created a special non-profit to help others. It honors their son, allows him to have a legacy in death that he couldn’t have in life, and it provides comfort and support to families who’ve lost a child.

Shana reached out to us as the non-profit began to grow, because she knew there were families out there, like hers, who would need comfort when the unimaginable happens. The world keeps turning, but your heart is broken. She felt that hospitals, OB/GYN offices and others doctors, churches and organizations might need a brochure to give to those families. Children who are still-born or those who are miscarried are no less precious to the families who wanted and planned for them. Even with medical advances, there is still loss during pregnancy and the Williams’ knew this.
Ryan worked closely with Shana, discussed what she would need in a marketing piece, and designed a trifold brochure for the cause (the graphics above). He also designed a folded note card to accompany each pillow sent to families (the images below). Being a part of creating any kind of promotion for this group that understands loss, prays over each pillow and is reaching parents and families in a dark hour was an honor for us. The idea seems simple, but when you hold one of these pillows – that weighs roughly what the lost child weighed – you understand how important this project is.

We all want to think that we can “dig deep” when tragedy touches our lives. I believe that in Shana and Thomas you can see true faith in action. When we are small, the Lord looms large as our father, our comfort, and our example to others. We are weak and He is strong. He teaches us to lean on Him, and as we receive His comfort, we also receive an example of how to comfort others.

A day in the life with the Guerrant family | documentary lifestyle photos
The Guerrant family asked us to photograph them with their 2 children on a single day – documentary style. We LOVE this type of photography, because it translates the desire to take selfies and snapshots and indulge in the every day, but into photos that are professionally shot and set up. You get the best of both worlds – the seemingly mundane with the magic in details and broad strokes, the togetherness, but with a trained pro behind the lens who is keeping an eye on light, shadow, scenery and all the options. ![]()
Ryan photographed Suzie, Matt, Leven and Ira at W. Kerr Scott Lake in Wilkesboro a few weeks ago. We met Suzie and Matt at Merlefest a couple-few years ago and, as fellow photographers and Merlefest team members, we instantly connected with them.
We love their down to earth personalities and they are talented and fun photographers.
We were honored that the two of them would ask us to photograph their family. As photographers, we know so many others they could have chosen, so it was a huge compliment to be chosen for the task. What’s even better is that we knew we would soon be needing our very own family photos. We LOVE Suzie’s documentary style, especially her black and white photography. The timing was perfect for a trade.

This family was so much fun. They were so open and children – with their own curiosity and agenda, their own internal storytelling – made it a fun process. They were happy with the results and we couldn’t be more pleased.![]()

This year Merlefest was like a reunion for us and they both showered us with joy and excitement over our pregnancy. We made sure to stay in constant contact after the fest this year.We spent half a day with the family as friends hanging out at the lake with camera in hand. Documenting the kids running, playing, fishing and eating watermelon gave us, we hope, a preview of what our life will be like when we add our son to the mix. There was very little posing, just natural lifestyle interactions and sugar highs.![]()

now scheduling: fall outdoor mountain portraits of families, children, engagement & bridal
Driving around yesterday, I rolled down the windows for a few minutes and experienced that first smell of fall. Leaves are falling and changing and the smell was that welcome first sense of the next season. Where did summer go? ALL of our seasons in NC feel like transitions to the next and I love it. We never have 10 months of summer or 9 months of winter like other parts of the country – thank the Lord. Autumn is coming. Start layering your clothes and adding a sweater to the back seat when you head out.
This means that it’s also time for fall portraits and we’ve planned a limited number of outdoor sessions for family, child and engagement portraits. We want to capture these while it’s gorgeous, but in specific areas, because this pregnant first time mom-to-be has her eyes on the prize when it’s not pressed against a lens. Book now! Details below.![]()

We’ll be photographing fall portrait sessions from September 30th until the second week of October (or until Little Man Case arrives) in Boone, Blowing Rock, Jefferson or Wilkesboro. Based on the lack of rain, history and the handy-dandy Farmer’s Almanac, we anticipate the color change in the NC mountains to be earlier this year. We encourage anyone who wants photos to reserve their session as soon as possible. Session fees start at $150 and are due at the time of reservation. Call 336-990-0080 or email mail@pixelsonpaper.net for more info or to reserve your session. ![]()
