Autumn Outdoor Bridal Portraits at Leatherwood Mountain Resort
Just a few weeks ago, we shot another June wedding. Katie Vance married Patrick Carlson at Leatherwood Mountain Resort. We photographed Katie’s bridal portraits on November 4, 2016 at this very same spot. Katie wanted photos at Leatherwood both in the fall as well as in the summer to show off the various scenic views. 
Leatherwood – a place we love and have shot many times for brides and grooms – is a favorite for its bucolic setting and rustic atmosphere. Katie chose it to showcase the opposite. She is more princess than country bride and loves to sparkle. Even the Vans she wore with her gown had purple glitter on them. Katie grew up in Boone and loved being in the glorious mountain views that surrounded her all year. She loved how the mountains could be so massive and still be charming in the details. Her challenge to us was not to photograph the farm’s rustic style but instead to capture the more elegant natural surroundings. We were happy to oblige.

So now to Sandy and Mark – our very first wedding shoot. Sandy and I were middle school youth group leaders together as well as friends. She watched for a few years when Ryan and I would take candid photos whenever we were with the youth group. When it came time for her own wedding she asked us a few times if we’d photograph her wedding. We kept saying “no way.” She finally put her foot down after asking four or so times. “You two are going to shoot my wedding.” She was sweet and we caved and it was on. The only complication is that her wedding was at the end of a week that we were chaperones for our youth group’s annual mission trip to the Pittsburgh Project. We left PA early to head to the wedding in Norfolk, VA with a car full of middle school girls who were also attendants in their wedding. YOU CAN’T MAKE THIS STUFF UP! With equipment that was far from professional, packed in suitcases with our mission clothing, we made it and photographed our very first wedding together. 12 years later Sandy and Mark (just below) still love their photos and we’re still friends. Sandy even hired us to photograph her oldest daughter’s wedding years later.

Looking through these June weddings makes me smile. Each one represents a day that changed the trajectory of that couple’s lives forever and there we were, pulling those indelible moments out of the air and making sure they made it on film. So many stories!

Summer, Summer, Summer – Great Time for Professional Photos
Every year there is the song of the summer. It gets played over and over and we make it part of that year, that season and that time. Those of us who grew up in the 80s listened to Bananarama (“Cruel Summer”), Billy Idol (“Hot in the City”), Brian Adams (“Summer of ’69”), U2 (“Indian Summer Sky”), Don Henley, Van Halen and others. The 1990s brought us DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince – or Will Smith’s “Summertime,” Len’s “Steal My Sunshine” (remember those scooters in California?), Smash Mouth and Janet Jackson. I hear summer songs this time of year everywhere, including in my head whether I want to or not. Don’t judge – you know you do too. And it makes me think of the little movies we have running in our minds. Our lives to music, with friends and family, children, engagements, new jobs, pitfalls and adventures. There’s a soundtrack and loads of mental images. This year, make sure there are some concrete images as well. Summer photos are keepsakes and we love taking them.
Ryan and I find that summer photo sessions aren’t just about weddings and engagements or Merlefest. We’re asked to capture families, children and any event that matters when the sun is high and people are gathered. Summer outdoor photos capture not only place and people, but specific aspects of where you are in life. What was going on in your family? How old are your kids? What sports or instruments are they playing? Do you have hobbies and pets you want to include? Do you take an annual trip to our part of the Carolinas every year and want to commemorate it? We find that our friends want to show off everything from their kayaks to their dogs, great grandchildren, new homes, summer vacations, gardens and just about everything else.
We’ll help you with location, should you need it and then make sure that the photos are perfect for gifts or family heirlooms.

Kendra’s Outdoor Bridal portraits in a historic setting in North Wilkesboro NC
It’s wedding season, y’all. It’s wedding season, engagement portrait season, bridal portrait season …….. it’s summer! Here’s more proof: Sweet Kendra Green Bell married her beloved Nathan just last weekend on May 20th. We shot their fun engagement session at Piccione vineyard and these bridal portraits. She was as alive and glowing as the landscape and it was a pleasure to capture how radiant she was on this day.
The setting for this session was a relative’s historic 100+ year old farm and property in North Wilkesboro NC in late March of this year. Kendra loves the southern charm and old world style both outside and inside the home. And this wine and Avett Brothers lovin’ girl had the elegance to just float beautifully in the shots we took inside the house and then the boldness to stand in a cow field and outside an old grain silo for a few of the outdoor shots.
Kendra seems to the manor born, doesn’t she? She is so pretty, comfortable in herself and in this place, it was a perfect setting to get portraits of her before she became a wife. We cannot wait to show you those wedding pics in the coming weeks.

Madi and Preston’s West Jefferson NC Engagement Photos ~ engaged, excited and eager to tie the knot
“We’re pretty much obsessed with each other,” they told us and I personally consider that a good sign if you’re going to marry someone.
These two lovebirds are a couple we adore. We’ve known them for a while due to the fact that we photographed groom-to-be Preston Roberts’ sister Meghann for her bridal portraits and stunning wedding. The family adopted us and WE LET THEM! We love, love, love this family and feel like we belong. So when Madison Ball and Preston became engaged, Madi booked us before she even knew the date of their wedding. 
Both teachers, Madi and Preston are recent college grads – she from UNC-Charlotte and he from Appalachian – and they fell in love beginning with a funny Instagram message that led to a series of texted videos of Preston playing the guitar and singing for her. That was 2 years ago. Since then, they’ve been living 2 hours apart, so when they’re together, they love to float on the river, duck hunt in Arkansas, go to App football games or to the beach and just crack each other up. These two are fun and funny, so we don’t have any trouble believing they enjoy time together and are going to have a successful marriage filled with lots of laughter.
Photographing Madi and Preston in various beauty spots around West Jefferson NC in the mountains of the High Country was a breeze because it was so completely relaxed and gave us a chance between set-ups to catch up on life and family. The couple will be married in July on the family farm, the same place we photographed Preston’s sister’s bridal portraits. They have no plans for establishing any new traditions at their ceremony they say, but they are excited about first seeing each other when Madi walks down the proverbial aisle at their intimate wedding.
We look forward to their mid-summer wedding and to seeing the family again and watching these two call it legal. Let the countdown begin and congrats on the journey ahead, you guys!
