Some portraits are more than just pictures—they’re milestones. This spring, we had the absolute pleasure of photographing Maggie and Holt among the stunning peach blossoms at Tevepaugh Orchards, a dream come true for their mom, Meghann.
At Pixels On Paper Photography, we’ve been honored to photograph this family from the very beginning—capturing Meghann and Josh wedding portraits and now their two growing children. As a Wilkes County family photographer, these lasting relationships are why we do what we do.

Peak bloom can be hard to predict, but this year, everything came together. The trees at Tevepaugh Orchards in North Carolina were bursting with color, and the golden spring light created the perfect setting for a peach blossom photo session.
Sessions like these showcase the best of spring orchard photography in NC—colorful, natural, and full of life.

Meghann had envisioned this session for a few years, and this spring finally brought the opportunity to make it real. As a children’s portrait photographer in North Carolina, capturing moments in meaningful locations is part of what makes these photos so timeless.
Maggie and Holt brought all the joy and energy we could ask for. These images reflect the deep bond between siblings and the beauty of letting kids be themselves.

To make the most of this outdoor family photography session, we used playful and candid prompts to help Maggie and Holt relax and have fun:
🌸 “Walk between the rows and explore like you’re in a fairy tale.”
🌸 “Lie down and let the petals fly around you.”
🌸 “Let’s find the prettiest blossom and smell it together.”
🌸 “Sit together under the tree and tell each other a secret.”
🌸 “Pretend the blossoms are snow and try to catch them!”
These creative photo prompts are a great way to add spontaneity and authenticity to any children’s portrait session.
This wasn’t just a session—it was a dream realized. Meghann’s patience and vision made this custom family photo session feel magical. We’re so thankful she entrusted us with another chapter in her family’s story.
The peach blossoms, the laughter, the soft spring light—this gallery is a reflection of everything we love about family portraits in Wilkes NC and beyond.

A while back, we blogged about engagement portraits as heirlooms. While 21st century portraits are no longer as severe and in grainy sepia tones, they do still serve a purpose as historical artifacts. I look at these young sisters below and think of the photos we’ve taken of children that their mothers cherish.

When we look at images today and see the amazing things we can do with filters and timing, it’s no wonder that everyone wants to be their own archivist, storyteller, photographer and keeper of the family history. Consider finding those moments where it will mean the most to have professional shots and remember that they will one day be heirlooms. And consider getting a professional to take them. You won’t regret it.

Two young brides above and below. They are a mere 150 or so years apart.

One family portrait – posed above.
A family portrait – posed below.

Sometimes the heirlooms are not heirlooms because they are posed. Images become heirlooms because they capture something specific – like the bride reading her favorite book for her bridal portrait. It was important to incorporate it for her. Sometimes, it’s the place – like the mountain home that a family rented so they could converge from all over the country for a reunion. Or it’s the mountains that became a back drop for an engagement photo shoot. And sometimes it is the unexpected moment, like the one above we caught of the bride and groom sharing a happy, sorta private hug.

Maternity portraits and new family portraits are heirlooms as well for generation and these shots, especially in informal outdoor settings tell a beautiful story of time, place and love.

Consider the photo albums and images in frames that you love seeing from those relatives you’ll never meet and schedule a photo shoot that will some day be relished by your future family.
We love family portraits whether they are set in the studio, the great outdoors, a specific location like the mountains or high country, or on our property in our outdoor portrait garden. At weddings, the couple is the star, …. but that’s kind of “the party line.” Honestly, the bride – the girl/woman/goddess/angel really does soak up a whole lotta limelight and that’s a good thing. As we gear up for months of bridal portraits and weddings, we wanna celebrate brides. Happy faces, gorgeous gowns, smiles, tears, tiaras, veils, friends, sisters, moms and details. It’s all good, but the girl is the thing.

We love veils and breezes. Stairs and light. And freedom to capture those great little moments that would be gone, girl, if we weren’t there.

I love photographing young girls and women, particularly when I can capture them in a way that others see them, in a way that is clear to me – that reveals them, but maybe not in a way they normally see themselves. There’s something about watching the revelation that happens when you show a young woman a photo of herself that is not a selfie – that is not frivolous (no offense to selfies and selfie-lovers) and they see a shade of themselves they’d missed. They see a character arc, another aspect of themselves they’d never noticed before. It’s both surprise and recognition and I love it. The experience of photographing Katie Waddell for her senior pictures was a ratification of this for me. It happened all over again.

Katie is a senior at Wilkes Central High School in Wilkesboro NC and she has completely touched my heart. She is the typical teenage girl – with her particular insecurities – but she doesn’t live in them. This girl manages to make sure that everyone around her feels loved. I’ve watched her make others comfortable, make them laugh and that’s what struck me and endeared her to me immediately.
When she wanted some photos taken for her senior year, I was thrilled to do them. Katie is so lovely, on top of her generous spirit and bright lit personality, she’s a perfect subject!
Katie is an amateur photographer herself and particularly loves black and white photos, so when we found a dead tree trunk we both thought was textural and cool.
We love to create short slideshow videos for clients to watch and share with friends and family. It’s just nice way to pull all of the great images and moments together into a dynamic album.

One thing she wanted help with for her senior portraits was WHAT TO WEAR. Oh……if I had a nickel…
It’s one of those crises women vacillate between loving (so many fun choices) and hating (too many choices). I offered to let her run her ideas and choices by me and one night I got a ton of texts with photos of her favorites under consideration. She, and I, had so much fun and she chose well for the setting she’d selected.
I told Katie to choose a spot that had meaning for her or that she particularly loved being in. Those of us with sand or mountains in our veins tend to gravitate to those locations again and again. Initially she wanted the woods near her house, but there was an overlook she loved as well, so we took photos of her in both.

When Katie and her mom reviewed all of the photos from her day, they both cried. She really SAW herself and I loved being able to give this gift to her. This young lady is just pure potential and I couldn’t be prouder of her or more excited about her future. My money is on you, Katie!!

Someone once said that “the days are long, but the years are short” and it’s true. It’s usually repeated by those of us over 40 who still feel 24, but I won’t go there. This blog is about babies. Big, round, gushy, adorable, cooing, cuddly, pooping, burbling bundles of life and hope. Some parents want to document way more than babies first newborn portrait and we love that we offer a way to do this.
But first… here’s Holden. Soak up that deliciousness. I mean seriously – WHAT ON EARTH is he dreaming about to be making a face that awesome?

Little Holden is no longer the teeny-weenie newborn or the 6 month old above, and we know because we photographed him several times as part of the Brand New Baby Collection, a package we offer to families who want to capture the first year of their child’s life and then some. We feel like we not only get to know the family even better, but are able to see and record even minuscule changes in each baby’s growth.
Below are a couple of goodies from Holden’s 1st birthday portraits and cake smash photo session.

The Brand New Baby Collection is something we love to do for parents, because it allows us to start with maternity (if Mama wants those shots) and takes us through the first year of the child’s life: newborn portraits (within the first 10 days of your babies life), 6 months, 1 year/birthday photos and with discounts on cards and a variety of package options including digital files, prints, image selections, etc.
