Merlefest Memories, Part I – the people

Back before we knew how bad it was going to get with the Covid-19 pandemic, we did know that rough times were on the horizon. The delay and ultimate cancellation of mass gatherings started in mid-March and we were not surprised that Merlefest 2020 was one of them.

It was the responsible thing for organizers to do, but we are certainly missing the crowds and energy this year. Merlefest would have been this coming weekend (April 23 – 26) and we long to be there.

So many new faces come each year to sit outside and enjoy music, play music, camp, sing-a-long and escape for a weekend. And, even more joy-producing, we see many familiar faces year after year. There are some serious fans, vendors and beloved musicians who just cannot stay away. We are part of that cohort, as official Merlefest photographers since 2015.

I mentioned energy before and it’s such a key to what makes Merlefest so special. Everyone wants to be there. It’s not some business conference; it’s a festival. It is a party. Music lovers swap stories, multiple generations show share the experience together, musicians show off their instruments and songs in progress, laugh, collaborate and “pick” together. There’s nothing quite like it. My heart isn’t broken, because I know cancelling was the absolute right call, but it’s a little bruised not to be there to soak up all that wattage. Still, it’s important that we all do our part.

One way that you can do your part this year is to contribute. MerleFest is asking for donations and ticket contributions to raise funds toward incurred expenses. Nearly 90% or more was already in place when it was clear that the shows would not go on. If you can and would like to make a donation, it would thrill us to no end. Go to the Merlefest site and do what you can with our gratitude.

The other part of Pixels

Asked to talk about photographing families, children, couples smooching in the woods, portraits of beloved friends and special milestones, I can gab on without stopping. But we have another part of our business at Pixels on Paper and it’s one that Ryan and I are so deeply proud of and are equally excited to promote.

At Pixels, we are also business and commercial photographers and called on for real estate and business profile photography, headshots and a number of commercial projects in Wilkesboro, Charlotte and the surrounding area. Ryan is also an amazing graphic designer.

Commercial and Real Estate Photography

Graphic design, establishing and developing brands, creating logos, coordinating visual vocabularies and identity systems for businesses, large and small, holds a special place in our business.

We love entrepreneurs, causes, non-profits, fund-raisers and events and established community organizations and Ryan has nearly 20 years of graphic design experience. His portfolio was huge before we started Pixels. We’ve added even more since then. Below is a mere sampling of favorites.

If you are in need of business photography or headshots, real estate or commercial photography for collateral, your website or other promotional needs, please contact us. If graphic design or branding consulting is something you’d would like to discuss or learn more about, we hope you’ll contact us.

2019 highlights

If this is our 2019 Year in Review, then little Riley above has perfectly summed up how we felt at the end of the year. Contented and tired! We did it! I wanted to share the visual breadth and depth of what our year looked like, but that would be volumes… volumes of images, stories, back-stories, comedy segments, prayers and all of the rewards that come with this gig. It’s a full life.

So instead: enjoy some of the highlights. There are plenty more, but here’s a sampling of people and places we had in our lens last year!

Above: on the commercial side – we took headshots for Krusch Divorce Resolution – a wonderful firm out of Charlotte. The cozy plaid, attic bedroom was captured to promote a real estate project from Kathryn Lily of Kathryn Lily Interiors in Cornelius.

Below: Spring in the orchard, included prom portraits, the Overby family’s return to the orchard, baby Ava checking herself out in a mirror, the expecting Orozco family of 3 about-to-be-4, and finally little Miss Paisley in a fabulous tulle skirt. The blooms and trees provided the backdrop, but the people made the experience and results perfect.

Late spring, early summer is the mix we always hope it will be.
Below: senior portraits (gorgeous McKenzie on the left), several delicious babies, kids and pets, some commercial work for the Wilkesboro Town Council and, of course, Merlefest!!

Above: more commercial photo sessions for MBI Builders, Wilkes Community College’s new Culinary Building, architectural exteriors and real estate projects, the chef and owner of the elegant Craft Bistro in West Jefferson, and a special trip to the Touch-a-Truck event.

Below: more prom images of high school besties dressed “to the nines,” and the full-on summer portraits of families with new babies, those expecting babies, family reunions at mountain homes, and a couple getting married at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh.

And finally, a round-up of faces we’ve known and watch grow for years, some very, very new faces, a celebration of high school and college grads and a destination wedding at The Biltmore Estate.

It seems fitting to start and end with babies. They are our symbols of hope, our reminder that life keeps moving no matter what and, let’s face it, they are cute as heck. Again, we want to thank the families and businesses we worked with last year. What a blast and a privilege and your commitment to working with professional does not go unnoticed. We’re looking forward to seeing all the highlights that 2020 is going to bring.

Architectural, Real Estate and Interior Design Photography

As commercial photographers, we love the opportunity to capture architectural images for builders and interior designers who want to showcase their work. Part of doing that is getting the various choices they make in terms of shape, space, materials and form. An indoor pool is just an indoor pool until you get it from the perspective of the person who has just decided to open it up for use. Then the room is about potential….. and memories.

We love so many things about shooting these types of photographs – and Ryan is masterful at it, by the way. More than anything it is seeing textures in materials, a palette come together, fixtures and lighting that give a room a sense of place and a feeling of home or comfort or luxury.

Interiors and exteriors from MBI Builders are particularly wonderful to shoot because they create such beautiful custom homes and commercial spaces. Every fixture is especially chosen. We’ve shot at the Blue Ridge Mountain Club multiple times, Lake Norman and helped Kathryn Lily Interiors add to their portfolio of cleverly decorated interiors.

MBI was also responsible for the ProCor office space in Cornelius, NC. The furnishings and style are clean, modern and elegant with lots of open spaces and natural light. Ryan wanted to capture all of this in the images he took for MBI’s portfolio.

Event Photography

If you are new to our blog, welcome! Look around and make yourself at home. One thing you’ll notice fairly quickly if you visit the commercial page of our blog, is that we have been Official Photographers at Merlefest every year since 2015. And we love it. We love ALL OF IT.

We love the dynamism, the energy, the chaos, the crowds and fans, and BOY do we love the music. As photographers, we are all over the place during that weekend of bands, vendors and community celebrations. Our task is to capture all of it – not just the various stages where some of the best performances you’ll ever see are taking place. We roam on a schedule and freely and it’s all amazing.

Event photography in the form of weddings is a completely different animal and when we were grabbed hold of by music event photography, it grabbed us hard!

Pixels On Paper official photographers MerleFest 2015 music festival photo

Not all events we shoot are days long and with multiple performers. Grievous Angels is a North Carolina band that Ryan and I love and we’re pals with the members. When they asked for photos of them playing, it was a no brainer. Like Merlefest, we were able to capture the energy and the musicians while enjoying the music. They play at smaller venues like coffee houses and they play to tried and true fans as well as newcomers who find themselves drawn in.

Pixels also covers non-musical events be they community or family. Last year in June, Ryan and I took Finley to Touch-a-Track, an event and fundraiser where we volunteered and captured photos.
