Gavin’s 6 month baby portraits

Just a couple of weeks ago, this little half-year old showed up in our portrait garden for his 6 month portraits and he was kind enough to bring his Mom. He even let her drive this time. [He enjoys a Harley, but that’s another blog.] Jessica and little Gavin Mendieta visited with us and I shot her son’s portraits and, man! do I wish there were photos of me crawling around on my hands and knees taking photos at 38 weeks pregnant. Alas, our minds were on the job…. you know – professionalism and all that.

Jessica and I met years ago at girls beach trip getaway and have been friends ever since. I was so happy to get to be the one to photograph Gaven’s adorable gummy smile and capture him at this age, because we all know how fast it goes. I’ll blink and he’ll be getting his senior portraits taken.

Normally all smiles and flirtatious, on this day Gavin was a bit more serious when the camera was on him. We pulled out all the stops behind the camera including Ryan jumping up and down and running in circles, which he was going to do anyway. Might as well do it for work. <I’m ducking as I say that. HA!!> We randomly discovered that what Gavin enjoyed most was Ryan’s very loud whistle. Hey, any port in a storm and it worked!

Because our sons will be so close in age, Jessica is kindly giving me boy-mom advice and a ready shoulder and I’m so grateful.

We love family portraits whether they are set in the studio, the great outdoors, a specific location like the mountains or high country, or on our property in our outdoor portrait garden. Jaxon turns one | first birthday portrait photography

Jaxon Andrews, son of Kristen and Matthew, turned one on July 21, 2017 and we photographed his one year portraits as soon as he was standing on his own and walking…. which was 4 days later – ha!! We met at a friend’s family farm in Purlear, NC on July 25th and it was wonderful. This kid is apparently taking his charm pills regularly, because his smile is irresistible and his blue eyes haven’t changed much since I photographed his newborn session a year ago.

Jaxon is all boy and loves farm life much like his big brother Luke. If he isn’t admiring the cows and playing in a wagon, he is toddling around his dad’s diesel mechanic garage or playing with tractors. I picture him behind the wheel of some amazing car years from now having both the smile to get the girls and the ability to fix the car if something happens to the engine: i.e. A Keeper!

Newborn, six month, and one year photos. They chose not to include a cake smash because as it turns out, Jaxon isn’t a fan of cake yet. What they will be getting is a custom designed photo book that shows off Jaxon’s first year on Planet Earth. For our baby plan clients, we also like to bring the whole family together at the one year mark for a family portrait. Often we’ve photographed the siblings and all the growth and changes in the family are fun to see and should be chronicled, right? We love the continuance and adore the families.

SUMMMMMMMER!!!

Summer 1963. Artwork by Roy McKie.

Some days, this is all I want to feel like. And I find that I’m grateful every time I do. It’s crazy-happy, fireflies, unbridled silliness, rocking in a rocking chair at twilight, watching the sun burn off the dew over morning coffee, wandering barefooted to check the garden for new veggies …… summer. This is the last summer Ryan and I will have as a family of 2. It’s precious in that it’s our last and it’s beautiful in the anticipation of our son joining us.

I’ve been thinking of the photos we take each summer of families, weddings, babies, etc and how they are unmistakable. It’s as if every person has that feeling that Roy McKie drew in the early sixties. We have another month or 2 of summer to celebrate, so whatever your plans, breathe it in. Let yourself go sock and shoeless, take a beat to feel the sun’s heat and the relief of A/C, as we southerners do. Here’s to summer!

I mean, seriously. Look at little man Brock. You know that he knows summer is awesome. He’s practically applauding it.
Pixels on Paper Photography Summer 2016 BirthdaysAnd so are we! Last year, on my birthday, we were having a summer celebration. We did again yesterday to celebrate Ryan’s 40th. We had no idea then that we’d be preggers at this point. Summer is special, you guys. We love you and hope yours is perfection!

a photography workshop shines a light in the dark places

Toward the end of March, I struck out on my own and took a leap outside of my comfort zone to attend a photography workshop and retreat. I love perfecting my craft, learning new techniques, comparing notes, etc., and we all need professional renewal, regardless of what we do. The invitation promised a focus on wedding photography, mastering and using lighting and exposure, and connecting with both your clients and your own desires in life. Tricks of the trade meets self-help meets community and introspection. I’d made excuses for not going in the past and this had an extra element of trepidation – spending 4 days in a house with 9 other women, all strangers. But what’s growth without a bit of surrendering to the unknown?Exposed Photography Workshop and Styled Photoshoot Photos by Misty McGuire Case of Pixels On PaperExposed Photography Workshop and Styled Photoshoot Photos by Misty McGuire Case of Pixels On PaperExposed Photography Workshop and Styled Photoshoot Photos by Misty McGuire Case of Pixels On PaperThis retreat was hosted by Elly’s Photography and I’ve been a fan of her work for years… another incentive: meet a fellow traveler, working photographer, wife, business woman. As it turns out, Elly’s really a life coach in addition to wonderful photographer and I found that my need to stretch was more important than my fears of hanging with strangers – without Ryan – in a house for 4 days. I needed it more than I knew. She asked questions about what I wanted to learn, what I wanted to see change in our business, how I wanted to connect with our clients. But then there were even harder questions. What are you really passionate about, what drives you, where do you see yourself in 5, 10, 15 years, what is your impact? I did work in “Clearing,” “Dream Casting,” and communication exercises. Photography is easy for me, the personal stuff can be really hard and at times very emotional.

I needed someone to ask me the hard questions. I needed my creativity to be reawakened, to have a new perspective. I needed to have more tools in my tool box to offer our clients. I needed to be surrounded by 9 other creative people that felt the same as me. I ended up having a blast and learning a lot about myself.Exposed Photography Workshop and Styled Photoshoot Photos by Misty McGuire Case of Pixels On PaperExposed Photography Workshop and Styled Photoshoot Photos by Misty McGuire Case of Pixels On PaperExposed Photography Workshop and Styled Photoshoot Photos by Misty McGuire Case of Pixels On PaperThe best part is that, through all of the personal aspects of the retreat, it was mixed with learning new ways of using my camera and seeing both natural and artificial light differently. Over the past 8 years I’ve become very comfortable with using artificial lighting for photography. I can manipulate light to be what I need it to be in almost any situation. This is a good thing. In fact, Ryan often jokes that I always wish I had one more light to add to the scene no matter how many I have. But what I found during the first half of our workshop is that I had stopped looking at natural light the same way. Natural light can be manipulated. It can be found in sources and locations I have ignored. All of the portrait photos in this blog use natural light and it’s not necessarily sunlight. The dark dramatic head shot photos for example were taken in a bathroom stall with a single overhead light on. The photos are not altered or changed in Photoshop at all. They’re straight out of my camera. I am newly empowered and so excited about using what I’ve learned during portrait photography, weddings, events, day in the life shoots and elsewhere. Exposed Photography Workshop and Styled Photoshoot Photos by Misty McGuire Case of Pixels On PaperThe next blog will be a continuance of this one, so stay tuned!

spring | such small hands

Spring in Australia begins in September and ends in November.
In India, spring runs from mid February to mid April.
Summer and winter are essentially the only seasons in Iceland – although both are relatively mild.
It’s seasonally spring year round in Uganda – with alternately wet and dry seasons.
And Scotland’s warmest months for the entire year are July and August, our late summer. Like NC, the Scots can experience all 4 seasons in one day. Spring in Scotland? Don’t blink.
And it has been that year here for us.

Pixels on Paper photography blog, Charlotte family photography, Outdoor family photography, Easter photography, Children photography, Photographers in North Carolina, Wilkesboro photography

One of our favorite spring places to shoot. A last minute cold snap took its toll this year.

I look for spring, actually look for it, because even the rain, quick showers in 35 minute spurts in the afternoon (my pals in the deep south attest to this too), signal its coming. Just like daffodils and dogwoods and irises do. When you see blooms like that, and you’ve set your clock to lose an hour, it’s time to store scarves. Maybe.

Spring also reminds me of being a kid. Sometimes it’s remembering riding my bike as hard and fast as I could with my friends. Sometimes it’s laying on my belly and looking at grass so close up that I wondered and worried about every blade and every bug and where everyone in the soil was going. Maybe it’s a reason why I garden.
But spring and new and children go together. I look through photos of kids outside we’ve taken and get excited. This is their time.

Spring will drive by us and wave and we’ll miss it. If you haven’t been out to lay on your stomach looking at bugs, or ridden your bike “no-hands” downhill, or stood an extra 2 minutes at the mailbox smelling the air: do it. It’s worth celebrating because of its very nature and its timing. I sometimes feel like summer, fall and winter take up 11 months and spring lasts only 8 days. No one said I had to be good at math.
Mathis Family Spring outdoor portrait photography photoMy unsolicited recommendation (you’re welcome) is to celebrate the season, your childhood, your children, your friends and neighbors’ kids and breathe it in. I’m doing it myself as we look at yard work as a chore and not a haven for bug adventures and the season as a gearing up for a busy summer.

Another parting little bit from cummings… and it could apply to springtime:

“(i do not know what it is about you that closes
and opens;only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands”
