Our Merlefest 2018 – Part 2
So much of being event photographers and particularly musical event photographers means being flexible, running around like a crazy person, knowing when stop, drop and roll and when to snap…. not like a maniac, but when to snap a moment. Sometimes it’s random and lucky, sometimes it’s absolute precision and experience and sometimes it’s a function of the reverie of music, memory and fun.
Ryan and I happen to be big time music fans which comes in handy when asked to return as Official photographers for Merlefest and asked to spend a long weekend capturing singer-songwriters, trios or bands we love. We can find the right moment to capture their instruments, collaboration or groove. We’re aware of our jobs, but transported by the music too, you know? As a job, it doesn’t suck. We love the lighting, the venues, the crowds and all the angles that allow us to bring these portraits to you.

This year’s Merlefest was not only a blast of great tunes, it allowed us to watch some favorites, see some new faces and capture dynamic moments and crowd-pleasers.

Our Merlefest 2018 – Part 1
You know there is a through line – a connective line that runs through your story – when you can link times of the year and events as if looking back at a journal from childhood or college or even a few years ago. Like the seasons bring the exciting and inevitable, Spring for us brings Merlefest. It is an example of that through line for us. We have been official photographers for Merlefest since 2015, making this our 4th year and since our first venture, we’ve had so much other life, including the addition of a child.
For 2018, it was a reclamation and revisiting and – poetry aside – a crap-ton of work – and this time, Finley was with us. We found ourselves again, remembering what we love as event photographers and serious music-lovers. Below is just a selection of some of our favorites!! Stand by for more in a couple of days!

music, memories, & the magic of merlefest ……..
We joined the Merlefest brigade of official photographers in 2015 and as our 4th year approaches and we prepare for our badges to arrive and the admin stuff to cross our desks, we’re getting jazzed. I just wrote about dreaming of spring and the orchard we love. This feels the same to me. There’s heat and sweat – the layers come off as the spring air evaporates the dew, lawn chairs are set in rows, the stages are literally set and the throngs arrive to listen to the very best in blue grass and Americana. We love Merlefest.

commercial prom portraits for Bridal Traditions
Recently we were hired by good friend and fellow wedding aficionado, Kelly of BeYOUtiful Prom Boutique at Bridal Traditions to take some commercial fashion photos for her. We go way back with Kelly and with her amazing business, so we were jazzed to jump in and do our part to help her as she prepares her marketing materials for 2018’s prom season. We photographed model and real junior-prom attendee Stacie Shumate in her actual prom gown purchased from BeYOUtiful Prom. The fashion shoot took place in our outdoor portrait garden at the Pixels’ studio in Wilkesboro. We photographed Stacie’s portraits just three short years ago in the peach orchards and can’t believe how much she has changed in such a short time. It was a pleasure and a treat! Thanks for letting us be a part of your business and life and for letting us watch you grow Stacie.

Orozco Christian Crafts – commercial product photography for a wedding client with a great business
One of the joys – and believe me there are many – of being a photographer is seeing something happen with a client that you had no idea about. Do you follow? Sometimes, you’re taking family photos of a couple with their first child and discover later that the second is on the way. Or a family has gathered at a reunion and later, when a beloved member has passed, we all realize that the photos were the last. Time moves.
This is not that story though. This is business and a wonderful one at that. We photographed Ashley and Oscar’s wedding last year and fell in love with them and their story. Now, Ashley has created Orozco’s Christian Craft Shop and you can find them and Ashley’s amazing specialty work on Facebook.
